The Shane Geoghegan Trust was launched in Limerick in October 2009. Building on its motto, “helping lives shine”, the Trust aims to offer children a range of community-based sporting and creative activities as alternatives to anti-social behaviour. A registered charity, the Trust was founded by the family and friends of Shane Geoghegan, as the necessary positive response to Shane’s death in November, 2008.
Street Games gives young people exactly what they’re seeking – the chance to enjoy sport, give back to their communities and aspire to greater things. The enthusiasm that this breeds leads to an increase in sports participation and recognition of the enjoyment that can be gained from taking part in sport. The aim of each Street Games project is to be sustainable and become part of the fabric of the community. This leads to stronger and safer communities, a championing of social action and volunteering, as well as improved health and wellbeing.
Through the very productive links that the Trust formed with Limerick City Sports Partnership, over 300 participants were offered access to various different sports such as, Soccer, Rugby, GAA, Rounder’s, Obstacle courses to name but a few. Multisport activities were also offered in each venue for 3-5 year olds and proved to be a huge hit with both parents and children alike.
While this initiative was funded entirely by the Shane Geoghegan Trust, Liam Cantwell who coordinated the programme on behalf of Limerick City Sports Partnership was keen to point out how crucial the support from local communities is. “While funding is imperative in running a programme like this, it cannot happen successfully without the involvement of the communities. We have received great support in the four venues. The residents association in Kilteragh, Our Lady of Lourdes CSG, Our Lady of Lourdes Youth Building, Rosbrien Anseo School Completion Programme, Southill Area Centre, Munster Rugby and the FAI, all had a role to play in making this years’ Street Games initiative the biggest and best yet”. They also worked in partnership with the University Arena to offer Street Games sessions to children, while parents could avail of health and fitness classes, taking place simultaneously on the pitch next door.

About The Shane Geoghegan Trust: The Shane Geoghegan Trust was launched in Limerick in October 2009. The Street Games Initiative involves bringing Sport back into communities, creating safe spaces for children to come and play sports and take part in other fun activities. Moyross all weather pitch, Young Munsters RFC and the green in Kilteragh were the venues for this hugely successful venture.
This year’s Street Games programme draws to a close this week after a long and very successful summer. Kindly supported by the Shane Geoghegan Trust, Street Games was run in three communities across the city. Moyross, Ballinacurra Weston and Kilteragh Dooradoyle were the beneficiaries, and all who took part enjoyed the experience immensely. Parents were delighted with the programme and are keen to see this initiative continued in the winter months. “It was a fantastic programme and we would love this to continue during the winter. The kids had a ball and really looked forward to coming every Thursday night for the last six weeks” stated one parent. Another parent who had recently bought their child a new x-box game was amazed that their child wanted to “go and play games” instead of opening the new computer game.
Piloted in Kilteragh last year with great results, the Shane Geoghegan Trust agreed to expand the programme to two more communities this year. This proved to be a great move, as over three hundred children took part across the three venues.
Without the help of local volunteers, parents and coaches from the FAI and GAA this programme would have been impossible to run. Children were given the opportunity to play Soccer, Rugby, GAA, children’s games and fun obstacle courses. For the last week children were treated to bouncy castles, inflatable obstacle courses and target shoots.
Pitch for Shane will be in Kilteragh with the Shane Geoghegan Trust, Street Games Wed 20th July.
Join us and make your figure in memory of Shane.
