About The Shane Geoghegan Trust: The Shane Geoghegan Trust was launched in Limerick in October 2009. Building on its motto, “helping lives shine”, the Trust aims to offer children a range of community-based sporting and creative activities as alternatives to anti-social behaviour. A registered charity, the Trust was founded by the family and friends of Shane Geoghegan, as the necessary positive response to Shanes Death in November, 2008. The objective of Street Games is to deliver sports activity in the community, ensuring that it is delivered in the right place, in a style to engage young people who do not warm to more traditional opportunities.

The Street Games Initiative involves bringing Sport back into communities, creating safe spaces for children to come and play sports and take part in other fun activities. Moyross all weather pitch, Young Munsters RFC and the green in Kilteragh were the venues for this hugely successful venture.

This year’s Street Games programme draws to a close this week after a long and very successful summer. Kindly supported by the Shane Geoghegan Trust, Street Games was run in three communities across the city. Moyross, Ballinacurra Weston and Kilteragh Dooradoyle were the beneficiaries, and all who took part enjoyed the experience immensely. Parents were delighted with the programme and are keen to see this initiative continued in the winter months. “It was a fantastic programme and we would love this to continue during the winter. The kids had a ball and really looked forward to coming every Thursday night for the last six weeks” stated one parent. Another parent who had recently bought their child a new x-box game was amazed that their child wanted to “go and play games” instead of opening the new computer game.

Piloted in Kilteragh last year with great results, the Shane Geoghegan Trust agreed to expand the programme to two more communities this year. This proved to be a great move, as over three hundred children took part across the three venues.

Without the help of local volunteers, parents and coaches from the FAI and GAA this programme would have been impossible to run. Children were given the opportunity to play Soccer, Rugby, GAA, children’s games and fun obstacle courses. For the last week children were treated to bouncy castles, inflatable obstacle courses and target shoots.
